About one-third of all natural gas supply in the U.S. is used for generating electric power. Between May 2008 and May 2009, production from power plants fueled by natural gas rose 10.6% while generating capacity for coal-fired power plants dropped 14.8%. Changes in temperature, nuclear plant outages and price differentials – all can have an impact on how much natural gas is used to generate power.

BENTEK’s U.S. Power Burn Report is a revolutionary resource for understanding changes in the demand for natural gas used for power generation. The underlying data used in the report is the daily volume of natural gas scheduled into each gas-fired power plant that receives gas directly from an interstate pipeline. This data is extracted using BENTEK’s proprietary, flow-data-gathering technology and aggregated by NERC region to provide the basis for a highly accurate assessment of gas demand in the power sector.

On a region-by-region basis, BENTEK’s U.S. Power Burn Report shows the power burn expected for a given temperature versus the actual burn, which in effect strips out the weather factor. The report provides a forecast of gas demand in the power sector for each region. It also includes an analysis of pipeline flows to gas-fired generation facilities normalized for temperature during summer and winter seasons that can be used to assess the underlying year-on-year patterns.
